While still numb from the events of the day before, we were at Heather’s soccer practice because to stop our daily lives would be like letting the terrorists win. I was sitting under a tree by the field working to keep the boys occupied when I saw a fire department brush truck pull up. By some sort of instinct I knew why he was there instead of at the station. I waited to hear the words from him before really thinking about it. “A group of us have rented a bus and we’re leaving tomorrow morning to just go and see if there’s any way we can help. I said I’d go - you’re ok with that right?” So many different thoughts and answers bounced around in my mind. So proud that they would give up their 5 day break and go to help people they didn’t even know because of the bonds of brotherhood and because every day that’s just what they do. So worried because our country had never gone through something like this and what if more evil was in store. But more than anything so relieved because I knew that if it were turned around and we were the ones in need there would be so many standing by waiting to help. So of course I agreed he needed to go. I probably didnt sleep that night for thinking of all that had happened and all that could happen – it all became much closer to home suddenly. The way we all were on September 12th, 2001 is something to remember. We were more aware of people who were hurting and much more open to doing what we could to help others. I think to stay in that frame of mind as much as possible would be a wonderful legacy for all of us who experienced and survived the events of that day – beauty for ashes and strength for fear.
