While the politicians throw stones back and forth across the aisle, children suffer. Those only focusing on what to do about the flood of kids need to examine what is making them come over the border and should take a hard look (in the mirror) at what they are running from in fear. The USs insatiable appetite for narcotics enriches and emboldens the drug gangs in Central America. So if you do lines at your friends New Years Party, do not delude yourself that it is happening in a vaccuum. That is not a judgment--I am certainly not without sin and am in no position to cast any stones--it is a call to recognize how even the smallest action can create a big ripple. I have been to Guatemala three times and want to be able to take my Mayan daugher back there to see her homeland, so I am invested in the well-being of the region, and admittedly biased. I resent that so many begrudge a relative pittance to aid children who are refugees from a situation we helped create while being oblivious to the billions spent to bail out and prop up irresponsible big businesses, big oil, and big greed.
