While this may sound like a good idea on the surface, to what extent is it okay to extend incarceration past a judges sentencing? Especially when there is not enough staff in place to make qualified assessments as to who is and who is not likely to reoffend? When did it become okay to incarcerate based on an assumption or prediction... and not an actual crime? (I.e., we think it could happen again...) Of course, we need to work on preventing and deterring crime - we need to work on reprogramming and educating and developing mental health treatment programs... but not incarceration based on a crystal ball premise.
