While you were sleeping.. Shares on Wall Street were steady by the close overnight as investors looked forward to tonight with anticipation, awaiting the release of the March non-farm payrolls report for the latest read on the strength of the US economic recovery. The Dow Jones index fell by less than 1 point, with the S&P 500 down 0.1 per cent from record highs, while a drop in biotech and momentum shares dragged the Nasdaq down nearly 1 per cent. According to Reuters, economists expect that employers added 200,000 jobs to nonfarm payrolls in March. In Europe, the European Central Bank left its policy rate unchanged at 0.25 per cent, as expected. ECB President Mario Draghi however did say that if low inflation persisted, use of “unconventional instruments” would be considered, implying that it could cut rates further before printing money. These comments come off the back of IMF managing director Christine Lagarde’s speech mid-week in which she implored the ECB to take “the right kind of policy measures” in order to prevent “job-killing ‘low-flation’ in the Eurozone
