Whispering Pines" page 2 As the men went to hunt wild game deep in the forest, the women gathered tasty roots, ripened berries, apples of all kinds, the tender new fiddle head ferns and wild pear in among the trees and out on the flood plain near by. As well as dry wood for the evenings fire went into thier back slings, the added weight went unnoticed by them..for it was just thier way. Shooting Star, thier medicine woman was held in high regard by all that knew of her gentle healing ways, foraged with them, teaching her daughter as she had for many years. She being mother of Whispering Pines, she gathered more herbs, barks, mosses and different mushrooms to prepare for the birthing of her first grandchild. " This Grandchild comes so soon!" she said more to herself..but the women close by smiled and echoed the words "Yes! Very soon!"and laughter followed as each caught on, drawn in to the teasing of thier healers exclamation of delight. Looking at her daughters full and heavy rounded belly the old medicine woman sighed grinning at the thought of holding this baby close, snuggling and kissing its beautiful tiny hands and feet. They all started heading back towards thier village, still bent in search of greens to cook with the wild game thier men would bring home, calling out jokes and gossip to each other as thier hardwork was nearing its end. Shooting Star saw an unusual mound under the ferns and tangled in the fallen tree branches, she silently quieted the group with her raised hand, she approached slowly as the others watched, intent to flee quickly from any danger at the slightest gesture from the healer! But today they would willingly bring home danger along with thier bounty of foods..a mountain man, a stranger. For this is what Shooting Star had found, a man who needed her skills as a healer.
