White men, in old age, are second only to adolescents among those who commit suicide. According to the Over 65 blog at the Hastings Center on Bioethics, they are generally suffering from the loss of status that comes with retirement and being in long loveless marriages. The blog doesnt address whether the gender disparity, or frequency, is expected to change in subsequent generations, when more women also define themselves through work and more marriages, in midlife and beyond, end in divorce.
