Because she, just like Elvis – and Elvis alone from Celine’s List – had gotten famous by mostly following the rules – and just like Elvis ….. The mistake that Elvis Presley made was never being a diva. While other performers are famous for their contract clauses – the only dressing room demand that Elvis made was for cases of bottled water made by a Tennessee Water company. When Elvis went to Hollywood – he was the first actor to get a box office percentage – and the ONLY LEADING Actor who didn’t have script approval. Elvis’ manager only cared about the money because he knew that Elvis fans didn’t care about quality or product – they cared about Elvis. Only Elvis cared about the quality of the work – and he was never a diva who demanded and as a consequence, never commanded – respect as an artist. And while Billboard was around before Elvis – the RIAA – the whole idea of Gold, Platinum and Diamond Selling records – never existed before Elvis. Billboard charted radio air play more than sales – because sales were not strong enough to bother counting – you could have a hit song and sell only 100,000 copies. Only one person – before Elvis – sold a million copies of a song.
