Whitten Community Church Box 247 Whitten, Iowa 50269 Dear Members and friends of the Whitten Community Church, David proclaims in Psalms 122:1 “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD. The Hebrew word for house means many things, among them ‘family dwelling’ ‘a place to come and a place to be’. The Greek word for house means the same with perhaps a heavier emphasis on family. It cannot be ignored that “house” is referred to more than two thousand times in our Bibles. Now we all know that the house of God or the Household of God is not merely a building made with brick wood and mortar. The house of God means also the people of God, the human collection of the redeemed. So the Apostle Paul would say, that in Christ, by the power of His Spirit, “We are no longer strangers and aliens, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the ‘household’ of God”. That being said we still gather in a building, a ‘meeting house’, the Quakers would say, and we ascribe to that place the title, “Church” or “House of God” and in doing that we have standards of respect because it in fact becomes our place of prayer, and of worship, and of gathering together to discuss and to do the ‘work of the Lord’, entrusted to us by Him for the “equipping of the saints and the work of the ministry”. As a body of believers we assume and feel the weight of careful stewardship of the ‘Church Building’ because this building does not belong to us, it belongs to God and to the generations it has served and continues to serve. In the keeping of careful stewardship of house and grounds, from time to time we have to touch base with all who care about such things and ask for financial help that this building may continue to serve its purpose. Just last week we had a funeral service for a dear member, Victoria Hanson, who left us way too early in life. It was a rather large gathering and a number of our ladies did an excellent job of serving and caring for the gathered family and friends. Our fellowship area had been restored and carpeted about three years ago proving a pleasant healing atmosphere for those gathered. You helped us with that. -2- Last year we took on a huge project of having our Stain Glass windows and window sills refurbished and restored. We are over halfway finished with that project. Early in the month of August the Large Stain Glass Window from the Old Whitten Methodist Church which was built into the new ramp addition in the early ‘90’s will be re-installed, having been refurbished. We will then repair and re-install the windows on the North side of the Church. Most of the money for that project was raised last year and you helped us. Thank-You! This year we took on a project that just could not be ignored; that being the re-shingling of the Church roof. For number of months and in spots for years we have had leaks we have tried to patch. This spring and summer during some rather heavy rain falls, out would come the buckets, pots and pans, as people entering the church were ducking to avoid the dripping at the entrance of the sanctuary. One person asked if this was a new approach to baptism. Needless to say we bit the bullet, reviewed some estimates, and had Iowa Roofing remove all existing shingles, repair any sheeting as needed, remove the chimney on the West end of the roof, and re-shingle the roof with a top grade asphalt shingle. In two days what we had talked about for months was done, including all clean up and removal of debris from the yard and around the building. Cost; $14,413.00 You have all been so good to donate and help in the past, may God Bless you for your help with these past projects. If you are able and willing to help with this project it would be greatly appreciated. Our target date for raising these funds is November 2013. All monetary gifts made out to the Whitten Community Church are tax-deductable of course. All money coming in for this project will go into our future building and expansion fund. Iowa Roofing has been paid. Now may he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for your food, multiply the seed you have sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness ; While you are enriched in everything to all bountifulness, which causes thanksgiving through us to God. 2 Cor. 9:10-11 With a grateful heart!
