Who me, competitive?~BDIN Day 19 How do you compete in your field? BDIN equips trainees to compete in their respective markets. Let’s examine a few competing markets. Why Target versus Kohls? Although their prices are similar, Target has the cool factor, Kohls doesn’t. Target has wider aisles, less crowed racks, and several checkout counters. Kohls often feels clustered, cramped racks, and long lines at few checkout counters. What about Coke and Pepsi, Taco Bell and McDonald’s, or Dodgers and Angels? BDIN educates the trainees to compete with a few of the following admonitions and in parenthesis the American model of excellence: Better and friendlier service (Starbucks) New products (Apple Stores) Call back after a week after you complete jobs and ask the customer if they are happy (Okay, this is unique, my dentist, Dr. Carmen Castillo calls me in the evening just after I’ve seen her that day to see how I’m am. Great dentist!) Take the trouble to get to know your customers (Tim Russert…Meet the Press…I sure miss him; he was very personal with all his guests.” Sell only quality goods (Cooking mecca, Williams-Sonoma) The ELI student trainees really got the idea of competition. Hilarie in particular really captured the idea. When he heard that not all customers wanted lavender smelling soap, he added lemon scent. When he seemed to exhaust his current contacts in Illula, he traveled to a neighboring community to widen his market. Once the ELI students realized the potential to compete, they embraced the opportunities around them.
