Who wins or feels better by burning a national symbol such as a flag? Does this help or hinder the cause for which you fight? Does this improve the divide between two different cultures? At a loss to attempt to understand what your ancestors have gone through over the last couple of centuries but I cannot fathom how such actions can help you heal or help your culture move forward. As a nation our prime minister, Kevin Rudd said sorry and I for one support this acknowledgement of what previous generations had done. Today, in 2014 I cannot believe that the divide between cultures appears to be growing for some despite all of the steps, actions in place to help cultures reconcile. Its a sad day when actions of burning a flag are what white Australia and the rest of the world think of rather than remember and pay respect for the challenges faced and focus on resolving future issues or those concerns not yet resolved. Almost all great nations have been found through the exploration and assimilation of those original inhabitants. This post is not to cause a race riot but simply voice the thoughts that have been on my mind since the images of the weekend and listening to President Obama acknowledge Australias original inhabitants in his speech. When will todays generation be prepared to accept the past for the past and work together to build an inclusive nation. Personally the colour of your skin is of no concern to me and I have friends of all colour and races but I simply wont defend someone, for any reason, burning a national symbol as this is not something that can possibly bring about a positive solution for all concerned. End rant and apologies if this offends.
