Whoever makes himself great will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be made great Let’s discern true humility from the false In Mathew 23: 13-27, Jesus strongly condemns the double standards especially in those who preach the Word of God and who make a public display of their religiosity. They are so ritualistic says Jesus, that they even give a tenth of the seasoning herbs such as mint, dill, and cumin, but neglect to obey the rally important teachings of God. (Mathew 23:27). They are the ‘blind guides’ who cross countries to win a convert; and when they succeed, they make him twice as deserving of going to hell as they themselves are (Mathew 23:155). They are like the whitewashed tombs who appear good to everybody, but inside are full of hypocrisy, lies, deceit and all kinds of sins. ‘They don’t practice what they preach.’ (Mathew 23:3). They love to be respected and adulated. Jesus teaches us as follows: ‘Whoever makes himself great will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be made great.’ Jesus condemns the double standards of the teachers of the Law. However, Jesus clearly warns us not to confuse the teachings with the teacher. The teachings in themselves are good. ‘ So you must obey and follow everything they tell you to do; do not, however, imitate their actions; because they don’t practice what they preach (Mathew 23:3). Jesus is the perfect Teacher whose teachings are in total harmony with His character.
