Why Bann the Truth The first week of October has been designated as “Banned Books Week;” this is a time to celebrate the freedom to read and to express one’s opinion “even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular.” The Bible is the all-time bestselling book, but in some parts of the world it is banned because it’s considered dangerous. The Bible is dangerous, however, only to those who fear finding out that they are wrong. It’s so dangerous that if you are caught simply reading it, you could be killed or even imprisoned. It’s dangerous to those who exploit the weak and the innocent, who use force to keep others enslaved in poverty and ignorance, who don’t want to give up their favorite sins, who believe that salvation can be found apart from Christ. How many people do you know that like to be told that they are wrong? People reject the notion that their behavior is putting themselves and those they love in danger or that God’s patience will ultimately wear out. However that was the message God told Jeremiah to write (Jeremiah 36:2-3 (NLV) 2 “Take a book and write in it all the words which I have said to you … 3 … all the trouble I am planning to bring on them, so that everyone will turn from his sinful way. Then I will forgive their wrong-doing and their sin.”). When His message was read to King Jehoiakim, the king cut up the scroll and threw it into the fire (Jeremiah 36:23(NLV) 23 When Jehudi had read three or four parts, the king cut them with a small knife and threw them into the fire in the fireplace. He did this until the book was destroyed in the fire.). The only way to know we are right is to be willing to realize where we are wrong.
