Why Do Good People Die? Isaiah 57:1-2 “Good people pass away; the godly often die before their time. But no one seems to care or wonder why. No one seems to understand that God is protecting them from the evil to come. For those who follow godly paths will rest in peace when they die” Isaiah 57:1-2 (NLT). Sometimes we foolishly question God. We question His fairness. We question His judgment. We question His ability to steer the world. We question why He seemingly allows evil to triumph over good. We question why He lets good people die. But this verse makes it clear that sometimes death is not only a relief from current suffering, but also a protection from the future suffering a person would have undergone had their life been prolonged. Sometimes when our loved ones are taken “before their time,” we question God. We wonder why He works the way He does. Well, this passage gives us a small glimpse into the possibilities; but the truth is that God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts, His ways are higher than our ways (see Isaiah 55:8), so it’s best to simply trust Him. This is so easy to say and to do in the good times, when everything is going our way, but when everything seems to be going against us—when the world seems to be winning and death seems to be victorious—thos e are the times we need to trust most; those are the times we need God most. So, the next time something bad happens in your life and you’re wonder if God is fair or if He’s in control, remember this beautiful passage of Scripture that gives us just a little glimpse into the ways of God—a God Who only wants the best for His people, a God Who cries when we cry, a God Who wants to save us from the pain and suffering of this world, a God Who wants to save our souls for eternity. All we need to do is put our trust fully in Him, realizing that He indeed is in control and that if we give our lives completely over to Him, He will save us and return us to the perfection we were created for.
