Why I gave my kid a $100 bill - Like more teenagers, mine tends to speak with poor grammar, not to do chores, disobeys unless told more than once, and sometimes displays lack of self-confidence. One evening recently, he was telling us about his day and was overusing the word like as usual. IE: I, like, walked into class, and like, ran into the teacher. It drives me nuts. So I told him if he could go a week without misusing that word, I would give him a thousand dollars. Of course he knew it would be impossible. We joked about it, then I got an idea. I said I would give him a 100 dollar bill if he could last until bed-time that evening with no misuse; just 4 hours. The bet was on. I have never seen that child so determined. For the rest of the evening, he slowed his speech and thought carefully of the words he spoke. Only once, about 30 minutes before bed, did the word slip. I caught it, but he didnt. Believe me, I was paying attention not wanting to loose my money. I told him he blew it but good attempt. So bed-time came and while tucking him in, I had a few words to share with him. That we were so proud of his determination that evening. That he doesnt have to be told more than once; theres nothing wrong with his memory. I then presented him with the $100 bill. I said he proved tonight that he is capable of doing anything that he sets his mind to. His eyes lit up and actually got a little emotional. I think thats the first $100 bill hes owned. So my advise is to use opportunities like this to encourage our youth. It was a silly and simple enough challenge; but one I think he will remember.
