Why XXXX stopped using retarded as a pejorative He wrote : Back when I posted to Usenet there was no such thing as controlling speech. You could pretty much say whatever you wanted. The only limits were how you wanted to be perceived. Well one day I said something to the effect of the person I was arguing with was retarded. I thought my post was quite humorous. That is until someone emailed me. Did they call me an asshole? No, they did something much worse. They said they usually enjoyed my posts but said they had a family member who they loved who was developmentally disabled and my post hurt their feelings. That made me feel like shit. That was the last time I ever used the word retarded to insult someone. You see its not always about being free to be an asshole whenever you please. Sometimes it merely comes down to common decency. Plenty of words in the English language. Taking one out of my repertoire hasnt hindered me at all.
