Why and how democracy works in India: In Bombay, I live in a one room SRA building where hundreds of extremely low income group or at best lower middle class families live. A few weeks back, before I left Bombay, I saw my neighbouring aunty extremely happy. Surprised because she is usually sad, saddled as she is with the troubles of survival, I asked her the reason for her happiness. She said it was the elections. Asked to explain she said that the village she hails from, somewhere on the border of Karnataka, is abuzz with political activity. Everyday some or the other political party would come there, ask them to vote for them and in return promise them gifts. Till the time I had left, her family had received a mixer grinder, an atta chakki and a water cooler from three different political parties. Confused I asked, if everyone is giving you things to vote for them, who would you vote for? Why, she said surprised at the question, the party that works and delivers on their promises.
