Why are you not vegan yet? Because I was born into a culture that encouraged me to eat animal products while keeping me ignorant of their connection to nonhuman suffering and death. By the time I learned that they came from animals, I had developed a much stronger association to farmed animals products as food objects for my consumption than as individual beings no different than cats and dogs. The social norms around me - advertisements, the behavior of my peers, associations with meat-eating with manliness, etc. - perpetually discourage me from making the connection, and encourage me to view vegans, those who *have* made the connection, as fringe extremists. I feel much more comfortable staying within that paradigm than I do with the idea of engaging in honest skepticism and trying to rise above my upbringing and culture. That is why I am nonvegan.
