Why do I post so often about the risks of formula? Because the hospital I had my first son at sent me home with a breastfeeding support bag full of formula samples. And when I was p at 2 and 3 and 4am feeding my new baby, experiencing excruciating nipple pain, I very likely would have turned to the formula if I hadnt read books and articles detailing the documented risks. You might think one bottle isnt such a big deal; using formula once in a while cant be that bad. But it really can be. Breastfeeding is supply and demand. Missing one feeding, especially early on, can change the way your body produces milk. Also some babies learn to prefer the bottle since it releases milk faster than the breast. This can be detrimental to a breastfeeding relationship. If a mother is armed with information about the risks of formula, those bumps in the road that can accompany the early days of breastfeeding will remain just that-- small bumps in the road, rather than derailing breastfeeding altogether and turning to formula permanently. If we dont know our options we dont have any! -Kristen
