Why do we speak of forty days during Lent when there are actually - TopicsExpress

Why do we speak of forty days during Lent when there are actually 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter? Sundays are not counted during Lent. For this very reason, some individuals may choose not to maintain their Lenten sacrifice on Sundays (or another day of the week), through the Lenten Season. Original Lenten observance was only 40 hours, representative of the time Jesus spent in the tomb. Around the 3rd century, Lent was extended to the 40-day period. Whether you choose to sacrifice for 40 days breaking fast (or another commitment) on Sundays, 40 days straight, or the full 46 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter, know that God is pleased in your offering and remembrance of his beloved son, Christ Jesus.
