Why is it that the number 40 appears more in the Scriptures,is it a coincidence? After taking a careful study of the Bible from Genesis to Revelations ,I found out that it was just more than a number God used the number 40 (be it years,months or days) to present a time of Trial,Testing and Judgement. *for 40 days and 40 nights God send the flood to wipe out all the living creatures on earth during the time of Noah and the ark *Isaac was 40 years when he married Rebekah and for quite some time they had no children as Rebekah was barren *Esau was 40 years old when he married Judith and the Bible says they were a source of grief to his parents Isaac and Rebekah *When Moses was 40 years old he decided to visit his fellow Israelites and after seeing one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian he went to his defense and avenged by killing the Egyptian *after 40 years had passed,an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush *The Israelites wandered in the desert and ate manna for 40 years *Moses went on the top of Mt Sinai for 40 days and 40 nights (twice) without eating bread or drinking water *at the end of 40 days Joshua who was also 40 years returned with others from spying the land of Canaan *the Lord delivered Israel into the hands of the Philistines for 40 years after they did evil before His eyes *Eli broke his neck as he fell off his chair and died,after he had led Israel for 40 years *Again the Philistines came forward every morning and evening to take Israels stand during the time in which Saul was the king and this was the period when Goliath tormented them. *King Solomon reigned over Israel for 40 years and died,he too did evil in the eyes of God by following Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians and Molech the detestable god of the Ammonites. *Elijah ran for his life from Jezebel and travelled 40 days and 40 nights until he reached Horeb,the mountain of God *God sent Jonah with the message that the city of Nineveh will be overturned within 40 days if they do not repent,and they repented and God did not bring upon them the destruction He had threatened. *Jesus was tempted by Satan after fasting for 40 days and 40 nights in the desert *After his resurrection ,Jesus appeared over a period of 40 days before he went to heaven In conclusion 40 represent a length of time necessary to accomplish some major part of Gods plan in His dealing with various proportions of mankind.
