Why should I read to my baby? He/she cant understand me yet. Well, its not as straightforward as that. In fact, babies understand a lot. Their little baby brains are like sponges ready to soak up every bit of nurturing available. Sure, nurturing involves human touch, warmth, food, safety, and security. Did you know that nurturing involves exposing your baby to words? As a parent, you are ideally situated to be the first and best teacher in your babys life. Babies brains develop quickly, so its important to prime your babys brain with words, especially during the first 9 months of his her life. You can do this by reading to your baby. At this point it does not matter that your baby cannot understand the meaning of the words. Whats important is that your baby HEARS the sounds and rhythms IN the words. Also, sing to your baby. Your baby does not care if youre not Carnegie Hall material. What benefits your baby is the rhythm and rhyme of the lyrics, and the closeness to you. Also, talk to your baby. Talk about what you see as you walk down the aisles of the grocery store. Identify items you see and describe their shapes and colors. Bring your baby to storytime at the library! Mother Goose times--storytimes for babies--are offered free of charge at various libraries throughout Buncombe County. At the Fairview Public Library, Mother Goose time is offered every Tuesday at 11 am for babies 4 months to 18 months. Visit buncombecounty.org/library to find the Mother Goose time closest to you. All of these things work together to increase your babys early literacy skills--the things he or she knows about reading and writing before he or she knows how to read or write. Please share this with everyone you know who has a baby!
