Why there are more incidence of Fractures in old age? It is because of Osteoporosis which is the leading cause of Fractures. Osteoporosis is a disease characterised by a decrease in bone mass. The most common causes are physical inactivity as in old age Poor nutrition (Protein ,calcium, or vitamin deficiency, or prolonged corticosteroid or drug therapy etc. Postmenopausal women are affected mostly as the reduction in estrogen production causes a predominance of osteoclast activity over that of osteoblasts resulting in bone loss & instability leading to fractures which are commonly in spinal vertebrae, Femur & Radius etc. Colles Fractures & Fracture Femur or Neck of Femur are most common etc. Check Calcium, Vitamin D levels Radiological examinations & Bone Denstimetry as per recommendations of the concerned Physicians etc. Prophlaxis or How to prevent? 1.Dont allow elderly to walk up or downstairs without support. 2.Most common is Slip in wash-Rooms & make them slip proof. 3.Avoid prolonged or long March or avoid long journey. 4.Take nutritious & balanced diet & adequate Calcium containing diets & milk 5.Avoid jumps or long steps especially obese & elderly. 6.Avoid prolong unstable or bad postures. 7.Choose smooth surfaces to walk. 8 Avoid sudden bending & carrying heavy weights. 9.Choosing proper beds, level of pillows etc. 10.Sitting on rolling or unstable objects be avoided as elderly are prone to get easily hurt by minor or trivial injuries.
