Wife of killed pro-Syrian official charged with his murder July 31, 2013 12:27 AM By Youssef Diab The Daily Star BEIRUT: The public prosecutor in the south charged the wife of a slain Syrian Baath Party official, her brother and nephew Tuesday with plotting and carrying out his murder and recommended the death penalty. Judge Samih Hajj charged Siham Younes, her brother Badih Younes and nephew Ali Younes, all of whom are in custody, with planning and executing the killing of Mohammad Jemo. Hajj filed the charges against the three based on Article 549 of the penal code, which calls for the death penalty as punishment. Jemo, a Syrian media figure and a Baath Party official, was shot dead earlier this month at his home in the coastal town of Sarafand, in south Lebanon. The judge released Jemo’s daughter, Fatima, as well as the father of Ali Younes, Khalil Younes, and his sister, who were previously detained by police, for lack of evidence. The probe indicated that the three were not involved in the crime and knew nothing about the plot to kill Jemo. Hajj referred the case to Judge Munif Barakat, the first Investigative Judge in the south, requesting that arrest warrants be issued against the three accused based on the charges. Before the personal motives behind the crime were discovered, the murder was originally thought to be connected to the war in Syria, since Jemo was a active supporter of the Syrian regime. Judicial sources told The Daily Star that during investigations, the confessions of Siham, Badih and Ali corroborated each other. Siham admitted that she asked Badih and Ali to kill her husband, who used to scold her and leave her for long periods of time, as he was busy with political duties and constantly meeting with members of Syrian and Lebanese security bodies. Siham, the sources continued, confessed that she suspected her husband was having affairs with a number of women in Lebanon and Syria. Another motive contributing to Siham’s decision to kill Jemo was the fact that he threatened to divorce her and take their daughter to live with him in Syria, according to the sources.
