Kenton Rhino Run is calling on individuals, families, teams and schools from Fish River to Grahamstown, Alexandria to Port Alfred, Bathurst to Bedford, Fort Beaufort to King William’s Town and beyond to WALK OR RUN for our rhinos on the 28th of September 2014 in Kenton-on Sea. The Rhino Run is an international trail running event to raise funds and awareness for rhino poaching and a great fun family event for all ages. Past participants describe the Kenton Rhino Run as a truly special event, in addition to the magnificent setting, runners love the fact that it is a fun family friendly event located nearby Kariega Game Reserve where the poaching incident that initiated the founding of the Rhino Run took place and which is still home today to Thandi the amazing rhino whose story of survival and courage continues to inspire the Rhino Run. The vibrant BOS brand, who is sponsoring the Kenton Rhino Run finishing drink - the new BOS Sport - are helping to keep the event green and sustainable. In 2013 the Eastern Cape was a clear winner with the number of runners who actually ran on the day and in the unofficial race participant count Kenton came out tops. Follow the Rhino Run Facebook page to view weekly posts on registration figures to keep track of which city or town is going to take the honours this year. With the addition of a new South African location this year in East London, as well as the first international Rhino Run happening in Mississippi, The Rhino Run is on track to becoming the largest single day trail running event on the planet! The Kenton Rhino Run, presented by Free Spirit Adventures in association with Sunshine Coast Tourism and supported by the Rotary Club of Kenton-on-Sea under their conservation sub-committee banner and their international rhino project, will be held at Homewoods Restaurant, at the Kenton Blue Flag beach. The run will be a mix of beach and bush running through the Kenton Eco-Estate. There are three routes on offer ensuring that this is a fun event for the whole family to run or walk: 6km (R100), 12km (R140), 20km (R180). The race sign in opens at 06:30 and the pre-race briefing is at 08:30. The race starts are as follows: 09:00 (20km); 09:10 (12km); 09:20 (6km). Additional beach activities will be on offer – such as a sand castle building hosted by the Sustainable Seas Trust to keep the young ones busy. To date R255 000 has been raised for the Rhino Run beneficiary funds. The beneficiaries of the 2014 Rhino Run are Outraged SA Citizens Against Poaching (OSCAP); The Chipembere Rhino Foundation; and Forever Wild: Rhino Project. The Chipembere Rhino Foundation, our area’s charity of choice, is a privately run, non-profit organization committed to assisting in the protection and conservation of Africa’s rhino. They are active with projects that involve collaring and tracking rhino, as well as training and equipping anti-poaching units. OSCAP was a Facebook group that was started in mid-2011 when the Rhino poaching problem in South Africa reached epidemic proportions. Within the first couple of months membership soared and various initiatives were undertaken to bring about worldwide attention to the poaching crisis. OSCAP is now a fully registered NPO and works closely with other Rhino groups, NGO’s, local and International Wildlife agencies as well as local and provincial government departments in order to assist where ever possible. Forever Wild: Rhino Project is run as part of the Wilderness Foundation, and manages the Rhino Injection Fund which was started by Dr William Fowlds in direct response to the above mentioned poaching incident while he was treating Thandi in the early days of her trauma. The funds are used to help treat rhinos that survive poaching attempts. This fund is a permanent beneficiary of the Rhino Run. In addition to public support, the success of the event is dependent on the behind the scenes and on the day work of volunteers, service organisations and NGOs in the area who from part of an Environmental Steering Group who join forces to put their weight behind initiatives upholding the Kenton Cares vision and mission.
