William Rendall (my husbands grandfather) died on board the trawler The Tetrach which sank on 31st November 1941 after a collision with SS Koogla (cargo steam ship) near 20T Buoy off Coquet Island. 9 Crew members were lost. The story was in the Grimsby Evening Telegraph on 2nd December 1941. Reported as follows: Nine Grimsby fishermen are feared drowned following the loss of their ship as the result of a collision in the North Sea. Three of the crew were saved and have been landed. The trawler was homeward bound from a fishing voyage when she was involved in collision with another steamer. The trawler sank in less than a minute. The fisherman had no chance to launch their boats. They were compelled to jump overboard as the vessel foundered. Although the crew of the other ship made every effort only three men were picked up from the water. Strangely enough all three survivors were off watch and were asleep in their bunks when the collision occurred. MISSING MEN: The missing men are:- Skipper Thomas William Norris, 3 Florence Street, Grimsby. Mate George Lancelot-Singleton, 65, Grafton Street, Grimsby. Chief Engineer, James Carle, 23, Newmarket Street, Grimsby. Second Engineer, William Rendall, 258 Corporation Road, Grimsby. Deck Hands: Frederick Ernest Shulver, 103 Garabaldi Street, Grimsby; George Wareing, 82 Wood Street, Grimsby. Deckie Fireman, William Revell, 75 Bursar Street, Cleethorpes. Trimmers: Jack Pearson, 17 St Heliers Road, Cleethorpes; Edward Thomas Symonds Love, 394 Cleethorpe Road, Grimsby. BEREAVED FAMILIES It is feared six women are widowed and fifteen children rendered fatherless by the tragedy. Chief Engineer Carle is married and has five children. The eldest is nine and the youngest are twins three years old. Mate Singleton has a wife and four children, as has Fireman Revell. His youngest child is a seven months old baby. Trimmer Parson, married has two children aged four years and nine months respectively. Skipper Norris and Second Engineer Rendall are both married. Deck-hand Shulver, a widower, has one son.
