William Rivers Pitt · I noted the other day (via my goddam phone because my internet was down) the passing of long-time ESPN anchor Stuart Scott. As a fan of sports, I had this man in my living room on a daily basis for more than 20 years. His career was groundbreaking. His talent was tall. His seven-year battle against cancer, and his speech last year at the ESPY awards about that battle, were remarkable. His joy at being a father mirrors my own. I want to underscore his passing, however, for a different reason: the impact he had on other people by way of him being his best self. In my New Years article this year, I asked you to plant that seed, to be that better person, through which you make others better, and they make others better, and on, and on, and on. The reaction to his passing by the people Scott knew best is all you need to know about the kind of person he was. Be that guy, so that when you go, the ones who know you best are just as ruined by your absence as these people are by the absence of Stuart Scott. It is a lifes endeavor, and worth every ounce of the effort required.
