William Wickwire P A N O R A M A #1 Waterfront Ocean Water Pool KOLOA / POIPU - KAUAI (See also 11 photos + 6-minute video) A great afternoon on the south side of the Island of Kauai with high school classmate Marla Meine Galloway, her husband Mike, Allen Carrier, kids and friends. Great house with a Chadwick School connection. These 11 photos are accompanied by a six-minute video that shows Mike Galloway boogie-boarding in on some pretty crazy waves off the point of the magnificent home 4792 Lawai Rd. in Koloa. This home has its own saltwater plunge built into the rocks, grandfathered in, and its own point... The surf break is called Heroins...just down from Acid Drops Heres the lowdown on these two surf spots: 1) Heroin’s — right hand reef break: sl-4,5 This wave is a short and very hollow throw out tube ride. You will see a lot of body boards here, but on the right day the surfers get some insane deep tube rides. A lot of fun to watch because it is close to the beach. Extremely dangerous because you are right on the rocks. If you do not make it you can land on the rocks or get smashed into them. 2) Acid Drops — right hand Reef break: sl-3-5 (Just down to the east, closer to The Beach House restaurant): This is one of my favorite waves on the south shore. I started surfing Acid Drops when I first came to Kauai in the early 70’s. What a wave! The reef has this unreal flat shelf that just comes right up out of the bottom of the ocean. When the swell hits it you had better be ready and in the spot! If you are off by one inch or one second you will get launched over the falls and out in mid-air. When it gets big – 6 ft. and 8 ft. and then 10 -12 feet plus — it is very dangerous. I have been held down on the bottom face first several times in the impact zone. But if you get the right wave you can get not one, but two or even three, tube rides on one wave. Good luck making the drop. It is vertical and even inside of itself. Acid Drop is what surfing is all about to many of us that have dedicated our life to surfing.
