Winning Winning is a byproduct of skills. There are tangible - TopicsExpress

Winning Winning is a byproduct of skills. There are tangible skills and intangible skills. You can measure the tangible skills such as skating, passing, shooting, and stick handling. However you cannot measure the intangibles such as desire, determination, and coachability. And unfortunately too many participants fall short of becoming athletes. There are two types of pains: the pain of regret and the pain of discipline. One never goes away while the other is temporary. Sadly, life does not have a rewind button. Character 101. Reputation is on the outside and character is on the inside. Start now. John Wooden once said, If you dont do it right now, when will you have time to do it over again? Most people change when it is too late because they wait to change when it finally becomes important to them. Dont wait to change. Dont negotiate. Dont compromise. Just shut up and do it. Rule number one, do just the opposite of what you want to do. Do fifty push-ups and fifty sit-ups as soon as your feet hit the floor in the morning, before you even go to the bathroom. Make a chart and put it on the refrigerator. Your hunger for food will eventually take you there. Where will your hunger for winning take you? Dont put the pro in procrastinate. Make a list. As the saying goes, hungry dog hunts best. Be hungry to accomplish something with your life. Extra skating, skipping rope, stick handling and shooting in the driveway, weights, running, etc. Whatever the coaches suggests, you do and then some. Put checks on the chart. If you are putting zero after zero, you will be nobodys hero. Rule number two, the one time rule. Do something the first time your told. Your parents, teachers, and coaches should only have to ask you to do something once and never have to repeat themselves. Dont think, just do. Wisdom is knowledge with time and you are too young to have wisdom, but you are smart enough now to have common sense. Mark Twain, Common sense is not common. Nonsense means you have no sense. Dont let your buddies bring you down. Be a strong individual. Be a leader on and off the ice. Lead by example. Rule number three, be different. Get yourself out of bed. Dont have your mommy waking you up. Dont be too cool for school. Get your PIP, your poop in a pile. Get in the corner after the puck. Get off Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or whatever. Get away from those thieves of your time. Have newfound energy for success as a student and as an athlete. Winners are never satisfied and losers are easily gratified. March to the beat of a different drummer. Have the it thing that coaches love. Losers fit in and winners stand out. But winning does not show up on the scoreboard overnight. Winning takes time. Winning is a series of little successes. It is an attitude. It is effort. These are really the two things you can totally control: your attitude and your effort. Herb Brooks, Sacrifice for the unknown. Go to work. The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary. Pride yourself on being a hard worker because it wont work unless you work. Win and work begin with W and lose and lazy begin with L. Make the choice. There is a winner within you. One day you will have to get a job. You will have to keep the job. Your skills will get you hired. Your behavior will get you fired. So, the sooner the better you get a check up from the neck up. Winning is a bonus. Competing to win is the key to a healthy self-esteem. Find the Highest Compete Level. Be in it for the right reasons. Competitive skills are life skills. Learn to compete. Make the choice and make it now. Have the spirit of a champion today. Will for skill and will for drill, then there will be the thrill. Turn off your computer games and turn on your ambition. There is a winner within you. Thanks for sharing. Steve Smith. P.S. I was asked to write this for a high school hockey coach who is frustrated with his teams lack of ambition.
