Winter whale activity continues with members of all 3 salmon orca - TopicsExpress

Winter whale activity continues with members of all 3 salmon orca pods passing by Lime Kiln Lighthouse (our kayaking route) before dawn on Sunday morning. Winter sightings of this species of killer whale are noteworthy as big schools of migrating salmon are not present. There is a very small resident (non-migratory) population of chinook salmon they can prey on in winter, but only occasionally or it would become quickly depleted. Possibly some late migrating chum salmon are still straggling through and providing some nourishment. The salmon orcas usually must seek food in the open ocean at this time of year so the recent burst of activity is interesting.
