Wiper Blade Science Wiper blades are a simple yet very effective invention. The basics behind what a wiper blade should do has to do with even, firm pressure along a flexible edge. This creates a squeegee effect on the windshield. The even firm pressure along the entire blade is important. We have probably all experienced a wiper blade that as it moves across the windshield it leaves smudges or does not even remove the rain or snow. This can be very dangerous since it limits visibility and could cause an accident. Over time, most wiper blades will wear out and begin to do what was just described. The reason for this may be that the rubber is no longer soft and supple, but is hard and cracked. It can also be caused by a bent wiper blade. Either way, if when the wiper blades are on, and they don’t completely clear away what ever is on it, you are probably due for some new wipers.
