***Witches brooms*** One of the classic signatures of Halloween is the witchs broom. Here is a simple and enjoyable recipe for making Witchs Brooms. You will need: One bag of pretzel sticks, salted or unsalted 8 chocolate bars or chocolate discs for candy making 8 white chocolate bars *or white chocolate discs for candy making Rice checks (or other if you desire, rice tastes better) Regular marshmallows Orange food coloring Paper cut out of a witch, about two or three inches tall, enough for each broom Plastic wrap or sandwich bags Orange or black ribbon or yarn tooth picks Before you start, be sure to insert a pretzel stick into one side of a rice chex, so that the rice chex becomes the bristle of the broom. You may need to carefully clip away a small area for the broom handle to be inserted into the rice chex with the tip of scissors. The catch with this is patience and just clip a small area at a time. The chocolate will hold them together if it isnt too loose. Lay each broom out on waxed paper or on a silicone sheet, to be able to remove them easily when they are dry and firm. Plastic wrap works also, providing your chocolate isnt too hot. Either on the stove in a double boiler, or in the microwave, melt the chocolate slowly and stir often to not let it burn. If you dont have a double boiler, you can use a metal mixing bowl that fits in the top of a kettle without falling through. Remember to place water in the bottom of your double boiler. You may not want to melt the white chocolate until you are ready to use it. While chocolate is runny, pour with a spoon over each broom, the rice chex will take a bit more to fill it. Cover both the rice chex and the broom handle with the chocolate. Have the witch silhouette ready, and place her directly on the broom handle while chocolate is still wet. This will help her stay on the broom. You can also later, using a little icing or melted chocolate, to adhere her to the broom handle. Let this set to dry while you melt the white chocolate. If you are using chocolate discs from a craft shop, and you have orange colored chocolate discs, you wont need to add any food coloring to your chocolate. If not, while the chocolate is melting, add just a couple of drops of orange food coloring (red and yellow mixed), and stir in while chocolate is melting. Keep stirring the chocolate after it is melted and removed from the heat. Using a tooth pick, roll a marshmallow through the melted chocolate, this is going to be the moon. Again, place on waxed paper or silicone sheet to be able to lift off later without it being stuck fast. If you want, you can place the witch on her broom on top of the marshmallow while it is still wet. I never had any luck getting them to stay that way if I was going to put them in plastic wrap or sandwich bags, but to just have them laying out on a plate, this worked okay. Place a marshmallow and a witch and her broom in each bag or wrap and tie shut with a string or ribbon if desired. These are great for parties at school and treats for people that you know. I never advise giving these out to children that I dont know. Most parents dont allow their children to eat homemade treats from trick or treating. This makes about two dozen, more can be made with more chocolate. You can also make these without marshmallows, or without rolling the marshmallows in chocolate.
