With all the discussion about the role police play in perpetuating racism and violence against Black people and other POC, lets not forget that it doesnt start or end with the police. Regular civilians often spark this chain of antagonism by making 911 calls informed by nothing but our own racist biases. Thats why we cant just focus on police or judicial reforms to save lives. White people who have never had to worry about being racially profiled by fellow average civilians need to challenge and resist their own racist preconceptions on a massive, national, even global scale if we are really serious about preventing the violent deaths of Black people at the hands of police officers. Until we can identify, challenge, and unlearn our own racism through deliberate— not just passive I dont see race— efforts aimed at a huge cultural change, we cant expect police forces to do any better. They will simply enact and amplify the racism of they people who call on them.
