With such strong storms forecast for the area, questions about the dangers of lightning arise. Horses are safest in a wooden barn that is well grounded. Unfortunately, the weather in our area generally includes the threat of thunderstorms throughout the summer. Whats a person to do? How do you turn your horse out? Baking heat and flies all day, or the threat of a storm at night? Fortunately, the danger of livestock lightning strikes is fairly low in the Northeast. We generally have undulating terrain and large groups of trees in or near pastures. Horses naturally seek low ground or groups of trees to escape the wind and rain, or seek shelter in their shed. The most dangerous situations are single lone tall trees in pastures or hilltop fields. Avoid turning out in fields with high elevation compared to surrounding terrain, and fence off those single trees. For those that have lost beloved horses to lightning, there is little comfort beyond knowing the death was immediate. Thank goodness it only happens rarely! thehorse/articles/10025/when-lightning-strikes
