With summer here, that snake in the grass may pose a threat to your pet. Both dogs and cats tend to be bitten on the face or the legs or have venom sprayed into the eyes. Rinkhals are a common snake in South Africa, but, if your dog or cat is a victim, it is important to identify the type of snake, this will guide your vet on how to treat your pet. En route to us, keep your pet as still as possible and cover the bite area with a cool compress to minimise swelling and discomfort. If the eyes are affected, rinse with large quantities of water or whatever liquid you have on hand (milk, softdrink, even beer). Most snake bites require veterinary attention.
