With thanks Elizabeth Tate and Students For Liberty: Trans Lives Matter. [-]Trans folks have an epidemic rate of suicide compared to cisgender people. 41% of people who identify as transgender or gender non-conforming attempt suicide. This is nine times higher than the national average. The misery that Leelah dealt with is felt by trans and non-binary people around the world. They face violence, discrimination, and total unacceptance. The Transgender Violence Tracking Portal reported 102 murders of trans individual’s around the world from January 1st to April 30th alone in 2014. Trans women of color make up the vast majority of these murders. There are most certainly other murders that have gone unreported, as well as the many, many suicides like Leelah’s. We must realize this is not simply a left-leaning, “social justice” issue. There are ways in which the liberty movement specifically can help trans folks and alleviate some of the woes imposed by the state. Trans folks face high levels of police brutality and are negatively affected by ID laws, and live their very lives in danger. The libertarian discussion on police brutality must start loudly criticizing the egregious violence carried out by law enforcement against trans people. While we discuss requiring state IDs for voting, we must discuss how many trans folks this will eliminate from the political process, seeing as many trans people are unable to acquire identification with their accurate gender identity listed.[-] studentsforliberty.org/blog/2015/01/10/trans-lives-matter/
