Following their global exploration by a fleet of massive ships, the Emperor determined that the West consisted of a bunch of dolts and was thus unworthy of interaction. Zheng He built ships which were measured [via recovered artifacts] at up to 500 feet in length [somewhat larger than Columbus ships [50 feet long]. The Song dynasty, dating to the 10th Century, created such technical marvels as the Compass, which in turn, derived from the advanced science and technology of the First Century Han Dynasty. He then destroyed the fleet and sought to isolate China from the perils of interaction with the West.
