With the announcement of Rogers purchasing the broadcast rights - TopicsExpress

With the announcement of Rogers purchasing the broadcast rights for Canadian NHL hockey I got to thinking why hasnt a Canadian team won the cup in twenty years. I submit it comes down to one reason: they dont have to. It doesnt matter how crappy the on ice product is, how expensive the tickets and concessions are fans still fork out the dough to go to the games. Now with the Rogers deal in a few years fans will have to pay (through pay-per view or a premium cable subscription) to watch the game at home! Even if youre not a NHL fan teams still skim money from taxpayers: theyll threaten to move and demand municipalities fix or build them a new arena. Its hard to picture a commercial enterprise that treats its customers with such abject contempt: count on another strike or lockout in a few years. Given the on-ice mediocrity and the outrageous ticket prices, I just dont know why the NHL is still so popular. If the NHL in Canada was a car it would be a Chevy Vega with a sticker price of a hundred thousand dollars. I gave up after the last lockout. I encourage everyone else to do the same; otherwise the NHL will continue to treat you like suckers.
