With the moving tributes paid today to Lee Rigby, like many others I ask myself, ‘what kind of men would commit such a vile act?’ ‘No kind of men’, is my response and it would be an offence to all creatures in the animal kingdom to say that they are animals. I believe in some sense they are alien to our world. I will never support capital punishment and my normal response would be to forgive them for their deeds, but I find that instead I hope they suffer the mental torture of many years in prison and that if finally they meet their maker they will find to their surprise that Allah will not treat them as heroes, but will instead make them pay through eternity for their wickedness. Since Lee’s murder I have spoken to a wonderful family of Muslims, my friends the Hindus at the post office, a family of Sikhs, Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians, and my many dear Atheist friends and I have come to a simple conclusion… The murderers of Lee Rigby whose aim was to divide on religious grounds, will unite true Muslims, true Christians, all other faiths and Atheists the world over.
