Within the past 7 years, beekeepers have been losing their colonies due to “unknown” causes. Perhaps it is because conventional agriculture has taken place of wild flowering plant species that would otherwise provide pollen for bees. Another reason for their decline is the growing popularity of a class of pesticides, neonicotinoids, which persist in the whole crop plant (including the flower and pollen!), once applied to seed coatings. The EPA will not complete the review on these pesticides until 2018, but three types have been banned in Europe for any flowering crop. Don’t give up on honey- it is as sweet as sugar, and a soothing remedy for a sore throat. In the meantime, pick up some organic produce which does not promote the use of neonicotinoids! We are so lucky to have relentless beekeepers like Rick at Mockabee’s Apiary. Come visit the Marina or P.G Farmer’s Market to pick up this local sugar alternative.
