Witnessed and took part in an episode that made me sad last night. Was Waiting for the train to go home, reading my book, tired after taking my classes. Suddenly I saw someone rolling down the stairs at the subway entrance and stay unconscious with the face on the ground ... It was a new black guy from Rhuanda. While he was still lying unconscious. People passed without looking, without caring. I jumped the turnstyle and went to help, turned him up, threw a little water and gradually he was waking up. He was well dressed, good shoes, cool watch, and hold a bouquet of roses. Sure was going to a meeting. While I was asking for help, some doctor or police, people kept going without caring. No one helped. After five minutes a young man and a woman started to help me, trying to call 911 or anyone. In the place where his head was on the floor had a pool of blood, broken front teeth, a giant bump on top of his head, bruised face, glazed eyes. 20 minutes and nothing, no one to help, doctor, police, agents of Metro, anybody. He sat on the floor and began to ask what had happened. I could see in his eyes that he was scared, he was lost. Sitting on the floor, looked at me and asked if I was a cop. I said that no, that i was there to help him. Then he said NO, you are a cop and will go to make me bad. He said that he was legally in the country and hadn’t done anything wrong, opened his wallet and began to throw his cards at me, social security, work license, credit card, and began to fight with me, I knew he didn’t know what he was doing, then took his cards and put in your wallet and put it in his pocket again. Then he raised but not able to walk, did not want help from anyone, he was scared, he was angry, suspicious, but still holding the roses, then I leaned him against the wall and asked him to calm down. It was then he looked at me and asked why I was helping. I said to him: you fell down the stairs, hit your head, you are not well. Then he said but you are White. White people dont help black people. So I asked why white people dont help black people. He said, the place where I come from they don’t help. I did not know what to say, I understood what he meant. But I looked at the ground and saw that pool of blood and pointed to him. And I said: Are you seeing that blood? That is red, that is yours and is the same color of mine. Don’t wanna know about your color, if you are rich or poor, if you are important or not. Im worried about you and Im here to help you. Slowly he got better and apologized for what he said, he was embarrassed by all, said he was going home to meet his wife, that were their wedding anniversary ,so had bought roses for her today. Here comes my questions Why white people can not help black people and black people can not help white people? Where is the difference? At that time I didn’t see diference when I looked his blood on the ground. But I understand what he said, what he was feeling at the time. I wonder how much he suffered in the country where he lived, being oppressed and abused. And here many times was target of prejudgement. And if it was a white man in his place, well dressed, good watch, holding flowers, a lot of people would help, huh?. For me, the looking of the people was the worst, they looked with disapproval, contempt, making comments without even knowing what had happened. Why the people are so mean? The woman that worked at subway said he was drunk, NO STUPID WOMAN he was not drunk, he was groggy cause he hit the head on the floor. You dindt see what happened to say. Other man said that he was illegal here in US, that was why he wanted to get out of there fast, and didn’t want wait for the cops or the assistence, the same you don’t know him to say that. NOT AGAIN STUPID, he was rushed to see the woman he loved, and had prepared a surprise. He knew that his wife was waiting at home without knowing what had happened to him. No matter if he was illegal or not, if he was drunk or not. Means that there is a reason to leave someone dying on the floor and not help? Whats going on with people they dont care anymore? Each passing day Im more ashamed to be HUMAN BEING. 20 minutos e nada, ninguem pra ajudar, medico, policia, agentes do metro, ninguém.
