Woman set ablaze by in-laws for giving birth to a daughter Shameful incident in Malda Malda, 11 December: Her fault to give birth to a daughter infuriated her husband and in-laws so much that they allegedly set Maya Mandal (22) on fire last night at Balupur village in Ratua police station ~ approximately 55 km from here. The woman with 80 per cent burn injury is now battling for life in Malda Medical College Hospital (MMCH) where the doctors said that it was difficult to say anything about chances of her recovery before 72 hours. Police sources informed that Maya from Notuntola village of Dharampur gram panchayat in Manikchak police station married to Rajkumar Mandal, a daily labourer from Balupur village in Ratua a couple of years back. According to Paresh Mandal, Maya’s father, Rajkumar, his mother and his two sisters tortured his daughter for dowry. “After my granddaughter Riku was born last year, the torture on my daughter crossed all limits. Rajkumar once drove away Maya out of the house. She was not given food for many days only because she gave birth to a daughter,” Mr Mandal alleged. “Last night we were shocked as Maya’s neighbour from Balutola village informed us that she was set ablaze by her husband and his relatives. The locals rushed Maya to MMCH but her condition is stated to be critical by the doctors. I want that those culprits must be given exemplary punishment,”Mr Mandal said.SP, Prasun Banerjee said: “We have received a written complaint about Maya being set on fire by Rajkumar Mandal and Promila Mandal. The accused are absconding. Police have started a probe. sns
