Women are involved in running many of these farms, but its overwhelmingly as a helper to the men in charge. Two thirds of secondary operators are women, most of whom are farmers wives. vox/2015/1/5/7474337/where-are-the-nations-lady-farmers-not-where-the-farming-is Though I agree that farming is a very male dominated arena and acknowledge that every farm operation is unique, in my humble opinion (based on the women that I have met and observed) when a farm is owned and operated by both a husband and wife, the women are not overwhelmingly helpers to the men as the article suggests. My observation has been that they all have their defined roles and without each of those people doing their part that farm or ranch wouldnt work. Also, yes, two-thirds of those secondary operators are women and yes, they may be farmers wives. BUT they are also farmers themselves. If both the primary and secondary operator were brothers operating a farm I am pretty sure the secondary operator wouldnt define his role as the farmers brother, right? My understanding of the census is that you cannot have 2 primary operators. One person has to be secondary even if they both have equally important roles on the farm. Now my #FarmHer plug. Seeing is believing. Showing women in ag working in their daily roles is important. Its important to those outside of ag who are consumers. Its important to those young women in ag who want to follow in their fathers footsteps. Its just important. What are your thoughts??
