Women in Embu County are destined to reap huge benefits from a business management training program. The program dubbed Growth Oriented Women Enterprises (GOWE) is organized by Embu County’s Ministry of Gender, Culture, children and social services and fully funded by African Management Services Company (AMSCO). It is a move to build capacity in the County and it is among the many African Training management services (ATMS) that are offered by AMSCO. According to Mrs. Pamela Rita Kiarie the county executive in charge of Gender, Culture, Children and Social Service Development, this Program is expected to impact women’s lives as well as assist in creating employment opportunities in the county. The program official began in April 2014 and has seen a number of capacity building forums taken place in sub-counties in preparation for the actual training. Mugure Githuku the Coordinator of GOWE Program said that the AMSCO targets to have at least one training session per sub-county with each session having a maximum of 30 trainees. She urged the members of the County’s gender task force to mobilize as many women as possible in order to increase the reach of the training program. She was speaking during a gender Capacity building forum that was meant to sensitize the gender taskforce on the expected benefits of the program. AMSCO operates under the UNDP with its mandate being to offer training programs to enterprises in the Sub-Saharan Africa in an effort to drive effective, immediate and lasting change in order to drive organizational performance. To qualify for the training, the interested woman must fully own a business or at least have 51% ownership of the business, business should be managed by the woman and the business should be operational for at least a year. Also present were men leaders who not only represented their wards in the Gender task force but also benchmarked for a men’s program.
