Wood River Wetlands 2014 Today my Mommy gets to go….how goofy is that to say, but still so appropriate. I always enjoy my time with Mom, it allows her and I to connect as we did years ago and also give her a little time away from her daily routine. She arrives around 8am, I have Mr MR all saddled, all by myself I might add ;), and was grabbing the black horse for her. Though our winter was fairly open, these guys need some miles and exercise….heck I’m the one that should have been walking! So up the highway to the Wood River we go, gabbing all the way and just enjoying the conversation and the weather. What a glorious day, slight breeze, faraway clouds and lots of sun. Our ride begins and off down the pavement to the gravel road, across the wooded bridge and into the wetlands. The views travel forever seeing the picturesque blue water grazed by reflections of snowcapped mountains in the far background, the mountains I love to ride. My mind quickly travels back in time to trips that Jude and I have taken up in those hills, the laughter had and the pleasantries of friendship. How lucky have I been are my next thoughts! The views that I recall looking down onto this lake from above are now in reverse, I am on the lake looking up at a place that I enjoy so. Although these views are quite different from where my mind had just traveled to, they also are stunning. Strolling along the Wood River with wetlands on my right, they include such a variety of plant life including tules, beautiful yellow water lilies, cattails and many sedges and grasses. These wetlands were acquired by the BLM in 1994; 3200 acres of land that runs adjacent to Upper Klamath Lake and home to a vast amount of bird life. I have a bird book, given to me one time, and no I don’t study it or remember the names. Although I do know the beauty these birds show everyone with a watchful eye and I respect every one of them. Today we saw many geese protecting their numerous goslings swimming along the peaceful edges of the river, yellow breasted blackbirds swooping in and out, white egrets gracefully lifting, sand hill cranes talking and taking the slow lift into the air and even a few buzzards. The air was delightful and sky stunning….only a few bugs created a distraction, thank you High Desert Trail Riders for another lovely day in the saddle.
