Work on Peripheral Ring Road to finally get under way BANGALORE: The government has finally decided to take up the long-awaited 65-km Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) on the outskirts of Bangalore. The project was conceived eight years ago. The project, which will connect Tumkur Road with Hosur Road, will see the light of the day with some minor changes, including truncating the width from 100 metres to 75 metres. Responding to SR Vishwanath (BJP) in the assembly on Tuesday, CM Siddarmaiah said farmers, from whom 1,810 acres had been acquired for the project, will be given the option of either financial compensation or sites. Japan International Cooperation Agency has agreed to provide financial aid to the Rs 4,300-crore project, which includes land acquisition and construction costs besides an intelligent transport system. The road width has been scaled down with the proposal to have sites in the cut-out 25-metre stretch, he explained, adding, "we expect the project to decongest Bangalore to a great extent". As per the revised plan, the PRR connects Tumkur Road to Hosur Road junction which links Doddaballapur Road, Bellary Road, Old Madras Road and Sarjapur Road. Sources said there are two options: Give land owners developed land on either side of PRR or give them cash compensation. Petitioner told to pay Rs 3,000 A high court division bench headed by Chief Justice DH Waghela dismissed a PIL and directed petitioner Bhajantri Madappa to pay Rs 3,000 as cost to the BMRC managing within 15 days. "The respondent is right and justified in alleging that the petitioner is trying to peddle his private cause in a service matter in the form of PIL. Apparently, this amounts to abuse of process of court, particularly when the facts are not revealed by the petitioner," the bench said. Madappa, an advocate and social activist had sought a direction to the government to formulate common rules of recruitment to all Metro Rail organizations. He also wanted a level-playing field to all sections of the society in recruitment.
