KANSAS CITY — The high-octane HDH Royals bullpen of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, after an extra day’s rest in Game 1, pitched 3.2 innings of more scoreless relief in Kansas City’s 7-2 win over the Giants in Game 2 Wednesday night. They are a prime example of how things in baseball don’t necessarily happen by plan but through circumstance. Command issues prevented Holland from assuming a full-time closer role in the minors. Davis, acquired from Tampa Bay with James Shields in 2012, only found his niche as the most dominant eighth-inning set-up man in baseball after failing as a fifth starter. And Herrera, the hardest thrower of them all, still cannot believe his 100 mph velocity when he thinks about how his career was nearly ended by a stress fracture in his elbow that sidelined him for two seasons in the minor leagues.
