Worlds Connect @ Your Library: Celebrate National Library Week at the Rapid City Public Library, April 12-18 By Sean Minkel and Morgan Sohl, Librarians This year marks the 51st anniversary of National Library Week, a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries, librarians and library workers in schools, campuses and communities nationwide - the perfect time to discover how Worlds Connect @ Your Library. Rapid City Public Library is celebrating National Library Week by hosting several events at both the RCPL-Downtown and RCPL-North locations: Bring your family to one of the story times on Tuesday, April 14th to learn a little about the South Dakota Highway Patrol. Trooper Desmond Watson will be reading stories, describing his work, and giving those in attendance a chance to see his patrol car parked outside the library. For individuals with a desire to learn about gardening, the Wednesday, April 15th Lunch & Learn features master gardener Cathie Draine who will be “Weeding Out Bad Garden Ideas” from noon to one o’clock. If you register by noon on Monday, April 13th, the Friends of the Library will be providing a free lunch. On Friday, April 17th, from 7 to 9 PM at the RCPL-Downtown location, the library is hosting a Youth Open Mic Night upstairs in the Youth Services area. Feel free to bring your talent in any arena and connect with others in that may share the same interests. Anything from a skill in a musical instrument, a vocal talent or poetry is welcome! If you don’t have an earnest need to perform then feel free to sit back and watch. There will also be drawings for door prizes. On the same night we are also hosting a Poets’ Coffeehouse in conjunction with the 8th Annual High Plains Writers Competition at the Downtown location from 7 to 10 PM in our Solarium. Bring your material or just come to watch. Readers can sign up the evening of the event or register by calling 394-4171. Poets’ Coffeehouse is a great way for aspiring artists to connect to others in the area with similar interests. Finally, on Saturday afternoon, April 18th worlds will connect at a Cultural Day hosted at General Beadle Elementary School from 1 to 3 in the gym. Student organizations and a variety of cultural groups from throughout the Black Hills have been invited to get cultural with attendees with examples of music, food, dance and activities.
