Worldwatch Institute says the globes population had risen from one billion to seven billion in the past 100 years. That has transformed vast areas of the Earths surface, altered the atmosphere and caused the extinction of thousands of plant and animal species. The institute says universal access to family planning would result in fewer unintended pregnancies, improve the health of families and reduce the rate of population growth. Those developments would reduce the output of greenhouse gases that are causing accelerated climate change.
