Worthington’s Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League 2013/14 Season Oh Oh 7 As The Champs Enjoy Their Away Day At The Sea Side. The second week of League action produced some blistering performances as dartboards wilted under the intense pressure of a tungsten bombardment that was dished out by some of Merthyr’s top darts marksmen. There was some tremendous scoring, finishing and drama to be had in many games as the blasted back after last weeks cup action. Division One. Merthyr Football Club Sea Side (C) 2 v Merthyr Labour Club 7. O I do like to be beside the Sea Side was loudly sung by the defending champions on their journey back from the Merthyr Football Club after they had beaten the Football “C” in a tremendous game that had everything. The match contained some 70 ton-plus scores, 42 to the home side and 28 to the visitors and included 2x180’s, a 158 finish and the top 170 finish. Craig Morgan 140 & Paul Thomas 100 took the first pairs for the home side against the darts beating Wayne Davies 100 & Gareth Dunn 2x100 in a keenly fought opener. Jason Baynham & Chris Galleozzie then turned the tables in the second pairs as they drew the sides level with a fine win over Jamie Evans 2x100 & Owain Davies 99 and in the final pairs leg Ron Morgan & Anthony Carstairs 125 eventually held throw to put the visitors ahead as Dale Pinch 124,140 & Justin Davies 100,121 squandered dart after dart at the double. Dale Pinch 5x100,140 again found the winning doubles elusive in the first singles game as Ron Morgan 3x100,140,158 out made it 3-1 in the visitors favour and Wayne Davies 4x100,140 beat Justin Davies 5x100,135,140 in another thrilling game to further advance the champions total. A fantastic display from Jamie Evans 5x100,140,1`80 including a 14 dart leg saw him beat Gareth Dunn 100,129,3x140 to reduce the arrears and keep the hosts in the match. A splendid fourth singles match saw Anthony Carstairs 5x100 beat Craig Morgan 3x100,2x140 to put the Labour lads 5-2 ahead and the next game saw Paul Thomas hit 5x100,2x140 for the home side but in a remarkable contest the point went to the away side with Chris Galleozzie recording 122,135,180,170 OUT to make it 6-2 in the visitors favour. The tide then kept rolling in with the final game also going the way of the visitors with Jason Baybham 100 edging past Owain Davies 100,134 to complete a quite remarkable win and send out a clear message to their rivals that they intend to hang onto their first division crown. Horse & Groom 7 v Heolgerrig Social Club 2. This was another splendid game with some 38 ton plus scores being recorded including a 180 in a well fought game. Veterans Ray Williams 140 & Iory Haines got the visitors off to a fine start holding throw to beat Wayne Gutty & C. Thomas 125 as they took a very early lead. The second pairs saw father & son pairing Gary & Matthew 119 Hughes take advantage of throwing first to beat Meirion Evans 135 & Bob Watkins to quickly level and then the Horse got its neck in front with thoroughbreds Phil Williams 100 & Brian Williams 2x100 getting the better of Trad Davies & Mike Evans as the teams headed into the singles matches. Summer League Singles Champion Phil Williams 2x140, 110 out maintained his good form with victory over Bob Watkins 100,140 to advance the home sides lead to 3-1 and 4-1 soon followed with Brian Nicholas 3x100 overcoming the challenge of Alan Moore. Steve Nicholas 2x100,2x140 maintained the hosts momentum with a fine win over Iory Haines and then Gary Hughes 100,140180 made it 6-1 with a hard fought win over Heolgerrig’s star man Ray Williams 100,135,2x140. “Trad” Davies 3x100 proved too big a hurdle for Steve Colvin 3x100,140 as the away side pulled a leg back with the last game going the way of the home side through R. Watkins 2x100 with a good win over the returning Daffyd Rees 2x100. Lord Raglan “B” 5 v Guest Keen Bowls Club “A”4. A match containing some 35 went right down to the wire before a winner was declared in a great contest that could have gone either way. Old warriors Viv Morgan & Brian Roberts took the opening pairs against the throw with victory over Teg Powell & C. Powell to put the home side ahead and 2-0 then followed courtesy of Thomas Thomas & G. Hughes who had a fine win over Lee Nicholas & Mark Seggerson as the Lord made a comfortable start. The Guest then got into the match with Mike Martin 2x100 & Mark Virgin 140 holding throw to score a fine win over Gavin Nicholls 2x125 & Brian Meek. Mike Martin 4x100,137 took the first singles game beating Gavin Nicholls 100,140 to level the match and then the Guest took the lead for the first time with Lee Nicholas 2x100 getting the better of Thomas Thomas 100 in a tight game. Seasoned veteran Brian Roberts 3x100,135,140 out classed Mark Virgin level at 3-3 and then it was the Guest’s time to attack again with Mark Seggerson 2x100,140 beating G. Hughes 2x100 to put the visitors 4-3 up. Viv Morgan 2x100,125,140 levelled the contest at four apiece making the last leg a deciding match winner. C. Powell 121 was last up for the Guest but he found Brian Meek 2x100,125,135,114 out far too hot too handle as the home side took the match 5-4 much to their relief. Division Two. Baili-Glas Inn “A” 3 v Merthyr Rugby Club “A” 8. The Baili “A” missed a tremendous amount of doubles last season which saw them relegated from the top division and they suffered again in this match as they were comprehensively beaten by the visiting Rugby “A”. Nigel Meek 100,140 and company lost the opening triples as they missed the doubles allowing Kerry Green 125 and crew to nick the leg and put the visitors 1-0 up but the scores were soon level with the home side holding throw to take the second game. Roy Element & Lyn Jones with an unconventional 86 out took the first pairs over Terry Morgan 100 & Drew Bradley and missed doubles again cost Nigel Meek & Cled Jones 100 as Phil John & Kerry Green 100 edged the away side 3-1 up. The last pairs also went the way of the Rugby “A” with Les Thomas & John Wood holding throw to get past Wayne Smalldon & Tim Charleston. The first singles saw Terry Morgan 100 again suffer on the doubles as John Wood made it 5-1 and the next match saw Kerry Green under orders to make it quick, not only off his teammates, fly down to a double but as he struggled to hit his target Drew Bradley scrambled a 100,139 to allow him a shot at the double before Kerry finally nailed his target. Nigel Meek 100 then beat Phil John 100 to pull a point back for the home side but the relief was short lived as Roy Element 100 defeated Cled Jones to make it 7-2. Wayne Smalldon 100,125 beat Les Thomas to gain a third point for the hosts with Lyn Jones just getting the better of Tim Charleston 100. Penydarren Social Club “B” 7 v Merthyr Ex Club 4. The Pen chalked up a fine win over the visiting Merthyr Ex Club to ignite their season with some performances from the older brigade. Wayne O’ Neill 140 helped the away side take the opening triples leg despite a fine 125 from Lyndon Price for the home side. The home side then drew level with good steady darts from Clive Morgan, Graham Elias 100 apiece & Ceri Stent 78 out and hit the front for the first time with Clive Morgan 100,140 & Graham Elias taking the first pairs over S. Williams & Matthew Sullivan. The second pairing of Barrie Gilby 109 out & Ceri Stent held their throw to beat Denzil Griffiths 140 & Steve Mahoney to make it 3-1 to the Pen but the Ex hit back in the last pairs with Andrew Davies 100,107 & Mark Nicholls 2x100 in tremendous form to beat Lyndon Price & Neil Smith to reduce the arrears to a single point ahead of the all important singles legs. Lyndon Price 100 found the target for the home side in the first singles but he was more than matched by Justin Davies 2x100,125 as the visitors squared the match and then they nudged ahead with Wayne Jones 100 getting the better of Ceri Stent 180. Home skipper Neil Smith 121 led by example in beating Mark Nicholls to level the match again before Barrie Gilby beat Wayne O’Neill 140 to put the home side again. This time they would not surrender the lead and further wins for Graham Elias and Clive Morgan over Andrew Davies 100 and Denzil Griffiths 100,120 respectively saw the hosts record a splendid 7-4 victory. Merthyr Rugby Club “B” 5 v Aberfan Social Club “A” 6. Freshly relegated Aberfan “A” found it tough going at the start of this match at the Rugby “B” as they lost both triples legs to stare down the barrel of a gun going into the pairs legs. Mervyn Hughes 100 & Chris Stansfield kept up the pressure on the away side as they took the first doubles against the darts with a good win over Kevin Downing & Mike Lewis. Warren Rees 121, 180 & Jody O’Keeffe then steadied the ship for the away side putting the stamp on Ron Phillips 100 & Colin Lloyd and then they drew to within a point with Lloyd Davies & Peter Emmanuel scraping past Chris Price 100,140 & Jonathon Davies just ahead of the singles legs. Chris Price held throw in the first singles to beat Lloyd Davies 140 and extend the lead to 4-2 and looking for the win but the away side had other ideas and fought back in fine style. Charles Davies 111 edged past Mervyn Hughes to pull a leg back for Aberfan and then in a hard fought eighth leg Phil Green 123 narrowly beat Greg Howells 2x100 to level at 4-4. The old head of Kevin Downing 137 then beat Chris Stansfield 121 to put the visitors ahead for the first time and then cool hand Warren Rees made the game safe with a win over Ron Phillips. Last seasons home hero Ian Evans 100 took the last leg of the match for the Rugby Club with victory over desert fox Ken Davies. Division Three. Aberfan Social Club “B” 4 v Merthyr Football Club “A” 7. The home side started the match like a greyhound out of the traps but finished it like a dachshund walking through glue as the Football “A” took control. Aberfan took both triples legs with Jack Colston 2x95 in the first game and Wayne Morris 97 in the second with G. Moore 100 in the first game and L. Davies the same in the second replying for the away side. L. Morgan & G. Moore held throw in the first pairs leg to get the visitors up and running and then they drew level with Jamie Phillips 100 & L. Davies 140 just getting the better of A. Galliers & G. Morris 2x100, 140 in a high scoring game. M. Davies 100,120 & L. Davies then edged the travellers ahead for the first time beating D. Collins & G. Jones in the final pairs. Vic Jones 100 squared the contest with victory over L. Morgan in the opening singles leg and a fine game from M. Davies 100 saw him beat Jamie Phillips also 100 to put the hosts in front again at 4-3. Enter the glue as A. Galliers hit 2x100 but failed to convert a double allowing Rhys Donovan to tie the scores before teammate M. Davies 100,125 beat W. Morris 134 to nudge the visitors ahead again. G. Moore ousted Des Collins to make it 6-4 to the away side and in a splendid final leg they increased their winning margin with L. Davies 81,90,138 just getting the better of Jack Colston 90,2x100. Guest Keen Bowls Club “B” 6 v Penydarren Social Club “A” 5. This was a hard fought game from beginning to end between two evenly matched teams. A. Coombs 140 & S. Wilkes 100 the home side take the first triples against the darts with Nigel Owen 100 replying for the Pen. R. Wilkes with a fine 85 out made it 2-0 as the hosts made a clean sweep of the triples legs. J. Sedgemore & C. Richards held throw in the first pairs beating A, Coombs & S. Wilkes 140 to get the first mark for the Pen A but the Guest responded well with T. Pollard 100 & C. Rees 74 out both in fine form . Michael Bond & R. Beynon were the victors of the last pairs to bring the visitors to within a point heading into the singles legs. R. Beynon 140 took the first singles to level the match and fine wins for S. Wilkes 2x100, C. Rees and T. Pollard 2x100 over Michael Bond, G. Jones and J. Sedgemore saw the home side go 6-3 up. The Pen though were not about to be rubbed out as John Murphy and Phil Bond 100 apiece beat J. Barratt100 and D. Spencer 121 respectively to gain their side two more valuable points. Angel Inn 5 v Lantern Inn 6. A nervous start from both sides saw both triples go against the throw with L. Russell 2x100,140 particularly impressive for the Lantern in the second game. L. Russell 140 & T. Good took the first pairs for the visitors and further wins for the pairings of John Cross/F. Connors & M. Flaherty/S. Ball 120 saw them lead 4-1 ahead of the singles despite brave efforts from S. George/C. Thompson & M. Jones/S. Davies. M. Jones took the first of the singles encounters for the hosts and when teammates Glen Callan and G. Hancock followed his lead the score line read four apiece with everything to play for. John Cross showed all his years of experience to beat C. Thompson and nudge the Lantern ahead again before Frank Connors 100 defeated Steve George 2x100 to make the game safe for the away side. B, Morgan took the last leg of the nigh for the home side with a hard fought win over S. Ball 100 to end a thoroughly entertaining game. Colliers Arms 6 v Merthyr Vale Ex Club (Daggers) 5. This was another extremely entertaining match with twists and turns from beginning to end in a well played contest.J. Tarr 180 & Steve Llewellyn 100 found the mark for the Daggers scoring wise in the first triples but the Colliers dug in to take the leg and an early lead. J. Murtagh 2x100 was on target for the visitors in the second game but again the home side held firm with Martin Firth 100,140 helping his side to a 2-0 lead. T. Rudge 2x100 & Harry Morgan 134 held throw in the first pairs beating the mature (old) Keith Lewis & Martin Treen 140 but the home side quickly regained their cool with young Jordan King 121 & D. Thomas making it 3-1. Steve Llewellyn 100,140 & J. Murtagh then claimed the final pairs for the visitors beating John Jones & Jimmy Rees to keep the score to within a point going into the singles. John Jones 119 out beat J. Tarr 100,140 in the opening singles to advance the home sides lead but then excellent wins for Steve Llewellyn 100,138 and J. Rudge 180 saw the sides draw level at four apiece with just three legs remaining. The man for all seasons Martin Treen then made it 5-4 in the hosts favour and when a man of many seasons Keith Lewis made it 6-4 the match was safe for the Colliers. Harry Morgan beat Martin Firth in the final game to claim a fifth point for the away side. Division Four. Winchester Bar 7 v Dynevor Arms 4. The “Dyn” took the opening triples in confident style but the “Winch” quickly fired back with Anthony Lennon 100 in fine shape to level ahead of the pairs games. T. Williams 100,125 & Eugene Wells took the darts off S. Barrett 100 & K. Lloyd 134 to take the first pairs for the hosts and when Paul James 2x100 & K. Pike held throw over E. Jones & B. Edmunds in the next they set up a 3-1 lead. Phil Lewis & R. Lee 100 held their nerve and throw to reduce the arrears going into the singles legs. Paul James 100 took the first singles with throw to make it 4-2 and a good showing from T. Williams saw him beat R. Lee against the darts to make it 5-2 to the home side. E. Jones 121 called on all his wealth of experience to beat Eugene Wells and keep his side in the game but then good wins for K. Pike 86 out on the bull and Anthony Lennon put the home side in a commanding and winning position at 7-3 ahead. Phil Lewis 100 beat Johnny Andrews in the final leg to gain one more point for the away side. Merthyr Football Club “B” 6 v Farmers Arms “A” 5. This was something of a shock result in a match that ebbed and flowed and could have gone either way with the final leg proving decisive. John Thomas 125 helped the visitors to the first triples despite T. Laing hitting the same score for the home side. The Football “B” then replied by holding their throw in the second game to level at 1-1. John Thomas 180 & Gary Price took the opening pairs to regain the lead for the Farmers and with Dai Jones & Steve Hamer then breaking throw in the next the away side set up a nice 3-1 lead. This then became 4-1 with R. Evans & A. Walters 125 holding throw to take the last of the pairs legs. John Thomas 100,125 hot footed it to the oche in the first singles but lost out to R. Hughes as the home side made a bid to get back into the game and the outstanding Simon Marks 2x100,180 in a 15 darts leg pulled another point back for the hosts beating Dai Jones. D. James 100 beat Wayne Morgan 140 in a thriller to level at 4-4 and then Gary Price edged past T. Laing 100,137 to put the away side 5-4 ahead. S. Rees levelled the match with a win over Steve Hamer and in a deciding eleventh leg I. Laing 125 saw off the challenge of Mike Terrett to earn the home side a shock 6-5 win. VNU 7 v Anchor Inn 4. A somewhat understrength Anchor side travelled to the VNU but still gave a good account of themselves despite the score line. The home side took the opening triples leg against the darts but the Anchor quickly regrouped to break throw and take the second to level. The break of throw theme continued in the pairs with Mark Hadley & D. Clayton taking the darts off Doug Wills & Matthew Fealey but back came the away side with Gareth Price 100,140 & R. John taking the next game. The final pairs was also a break of throw with Clive Powell 100 & Craig Berrington 135 giving the VNU a 3-2 lead going into the singles legs. Eddie Cunnington 100 held throw in the first singles to increase the lead to 4-2 but the splendid Gareth Price kept the match alive with a fine win over Mark Hadley to reduce the arrears to just one point. New recruit Derek Krolak overcame the challenge of Chris Budding to make it 5-3 and further wins for Errold Jones and Clive Powell then made it 7-3 to the VNU. Gareth Price claimed the last point for the Anchor with a good win over Craig Berrington. Farmers Arms “A” 6 v Rose & Crown 5. This was another tough match with both sides giving their all in pursuit of a win and a push up the table hopefully towards the top. The Farmers “B” took the opening triples against the throw with Stewart Charleston 100, 140 leading the home sides charge but a ton from Kristian Dowd and a 116 from S. Hughes in the second saw the Rose come back to level. Little ‘n’ large Stewart Charleston & Dean Moulds took the opening pairs breaking Kristian Dowd 100 & S. Hughes to regain the lead for the home side but then the self titled Dynamic Duo Brian Evans 121 & Neil Roberts were more liked fat man and dobbin as they came off second best as veterans Kevin Morgan 100 & Alan Evans made it two apiece. The break of throw habit continued in the final pairs with Keith Westcott & C. George edging the home side into a 3-2 lead as the sides prepared for the singles legs. Brian Evans returned to winning ways with a win over P. Lewis as he held throw in the first singles to increase the hosts lead to 4-2 before Dai McCloughlin pulled a point back for the Rose. Keith Westcott 100,105 put the home side on the brink of victory with a great win over Steve Evans 2x100 but the Rose refused to wilt and fought back with excellent wins for Kristian Down 140 and M. Lee 100,140 over Neil Roberts and Stewart Charleston 125,140 respectively to set up a deciding last leg. Veteran Kevin Morgan was in action for the Rose in the last leg but he came up against inform Dean Moulds 180 as the Farmers won the match 6-5. Division Five. Cyfarthfa Arms. 7 v Morlais Tavern “B” 4. The Morlais “B” started very well taking both triples legs with Gary Flye 100 leading the charge for the visitors in the first leg as they took a 2-0 lead into the pairs encounters. The pairs saw a complete change of fortune with H. Jones & L. Terrett breaking throw in the first game and teammate pairings of D. Bracegirdle/K.Driscoll & Dominic Illari/J. Russell then added the remaining two pairs games for a clean sweep and a 3-2 lead going into the singles. M. Davies 121,140 94 out was in spectacular form for the visitors in the first singles with a fine victory over D. Morley and then Gary Flye 100 beat D. Bracegirdle to regain the lead for the Morlais. The Cyfarthfa refused to be beaten and drew level again J. Russell at four apiece before wins for Dominic Illari, H. Jones and J. Toye over J. Crowle125, E. Williams and S. Phillips respectively secured a fine win for the home side ., VERY IMPORTANT. Will all teams in Division Four please note that the Gordon’s L have been expelled from the league and have now been replaced by the Mountain Ash Inn in Twyn. That means that this week the Rose & Crown will now be home to the Mt Ash this Friday. New fixture lists for Division Four will be issued in the October delegates meeting but teams should continue to use the ones they have at present just replacing the Gordon’s with the MT. The Singles/Doubles/Triples entries must be submitted at the October meeting. If there is no entry sheet in your packs then please just put them on an ordinary sheet of people and the rest will be sorted out for you. Looking for a good game to watch this weekend?. Then don’t bother going to Old Tafford head to the Baili-Glas Inn on Friday night when last seasons League Runners-Up the Baili “B” will face the defending champions from the Merthyr Labour Club in what’s sure to be a cracking game with both sides looking for the win. A great night of darts is guaranteed so why not pop along and enjoy a great night.
