Worthington’s Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League 2013/14 Season. Prolific Pirate Pearce Plunders Points For Baili “B” While “A” Side Terminate The Ex. League game six of the Worthington’s Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League saw the chalk on fire as the players produced some astonishing action with calculator’s failing to comprehend what was happening with a tungsten typhoon wreaking havoc with the treble twenty target the length and breadth of the league. Division One. Baili-Glas Inn “B” 7 v Guest Keen Bowls Club “A” 2. This was an absolutely enthralling match containing 50 ton-plus scores which included 4 ton-plus finishes and 4 x 180’s and countless 60+ to 90+ scores. The Guest took the opening pairs leg with Mike Martin 100 & Lee Nicholas 2x100 finding their range to hold throw and beat Matthew Quinlan & Andrew Rough 2x100 and then the visitors sprang a shock with C. The final pairs leg saw Jeff Pearce 180 & Steve Haman 100 up the game for the home side breaking the throw of Mark Seggerson 125 & Mark Virgin to trail by just one point going into the singles. The first of the singles legs saw Mike Martin 3x100,119,140,78 out in fine form for the Guest but he found Andrew Rough 3x100, 180, 102 out, 116 out meaner than Frankenstein’s monsters bank manager as he took the game 2-1 to draw the scores level at 2-2 with five games left to play. Marvellous Matthew Quinlan 3x100,3x140 was next up for the hosts and he broke the throw of Lee Nicholas 2x100 to edge the Baili 3-2 ahead. A hold of throw in the next match up saw Byron Jones 134,100 out beat Teg Powell 2x100 to extend the hosts lead to 4-2 and the action was about to get hotter. Mark Seggerson 2x100 had the job of halting the Baili’s run but he found himself up against prolific Jeff Pearce who with scores of 100,122,140, 2x180 (his 2nd & 3rd of the night) 102 out maintained the home sides momentum to see them go 5-2 up. Mervyn Matthews 100,127,2x140 kept the hosts scoreboard ticking along with a fine win over Mark Virgin 121 before Steve Haman 100,122,128 completed the win with victory over C. Powell. Merthyr Labour Club 7 v Troedyrhiw Ex Club2. The defending champions maintained their impressive start to the season as they kept up their unbeaten run with a fine win over the visiting Troedyrhiw Ex Club who’s return to division one has so far been a painful one as they still search for their first win of the season. Ron Morgan 140 & Anthony Carstairs took the opening pairs against the darts beating Gary Champion & Glen Kitchen as the home side took an early lead and 2-0 quickly followed courtesy of Gareth Dunn 140 & Chris Galleozzie 100 who edged past Tony Hedges & D. James 123. Veterans Tony Galliers & Ron Davies 100 apiece then got the Ex into the match with a fine win over Wayne Davies 140 & Jason Baynham as the teams headed into the singles legs. In form Gareth Dunn 2x100,2x140, 120 out including a magnificent 12 dart leg saws him beat Tony Galliers 2x100, 140 to put the hosts 3-1 ahead and reliable Ron Morgan 100,2x140 increased it further beating Glen Kitchen 2x100, 123,125 in a tense hard fought game. 5-1 clocked up for the Labour Club with Anthony Carstairs 100,140 holding throw to beat D. James 100,140 but game seven saw the visitors earn a vital second point with old maestro Gary Champion 3x100,121,140 getting the better of Wayne Davies 2x100,140. Chris Galleozzie 2x100,2x140 put the hosts back on the front foot beating Ron Davies before Jason Baynham 100 completed the victory beating Tony Hedges 100. Merthyr Football Club “Sea Side” “C” 6 v Lord Raglan “B” 3. This was a very exciting game from start to finish containing some 52 ton-plus scores with 2x180’s in the total. The vastly experienced duo of Viv Morgan & Brian Roberts 123 got the Lord off to a good start beating Jamie Evans 100 & Owain Davies 2x100 as the visitors took an early lead. The lead though was short lived as Justin Davies 100,140 & Kevin Hyde 100,121 beat Gary Hughes & Keirion Meek 100 and then the Football Club took the lead through Craig Morgan 100,121 & Paul Thomas 100,140 who took the darts off Thomas Thomas & Brian Meek 100 as the sides warmed up for the singles matches. A splendid first singles saw the scores tied with Thomas Thomas 100, 2x140 edging past Craig Morgan 5x100,140 by a 2-1 score line but the hosts were quick to regain the lead with Paul Thomas 3x100,2x180 beating Brian Roberts 100 by a 2-0 margin to make it 3-2. A hard fought third singles saw Justin Davies 3x100,121,122 beat Keirion Meek 100,130 as the hosts went further ahead but seasoned veteran Brian Meek 100 quickly pulled a point back with a 2-1 victory over Jamie Evans 2x100,140,112 out to see the scores at 4-3 in the Football Club’s favour. When in Blackpool if you want a laugh you go to watch Roy “Chubby” Brown in Merthyr Darts if you want to be entertained you watch Steve “Chubby” Thomas who with 3x100 beat another veteran Viv Morgan 100,121 by a 2-0 margin to make it 5-3 with the final game also going to the home side with Kevin Hyde 4x100,105,140 over coming the challenge of Gary Hughes 2x100,121 to complete the victory. Mount Pleasant Inn 5 v Heolgerrig Social Club 4. This was a tense hard fought game from start to finish going right to the wire before the match was finally decided. Ray Williams & Iory Haines 140 got the visitors off to a good start taking full advantage of first throw to beat Karl Manns & Dai Phelps for an early lead but it was short lived as Derek Dobbins 2x100 & Neil Baldwin got the better of Trad Davies & Alan Moore to level at one apiece. The third & final pairs went the way of the Mount with D. Morley & Colin Yendle 140 winning a titanic struggle with Colin Morgan 140 & Meirion Evans 100 to give the hosts a 2-1 lead going into the singles matches. Mike Evans 100 scored a tremendous 2-0 win over Karl Manns 125 to level the match and the second singles saw the visitors regain the lead with veteran Iory Haines 3x140 fending off the challenge of Neil Baldwin 2x100 to win by a 2-0 margin. Dai Morley 2x100,139,2x140 squared the match at 3-3 with a 2-1 win over Bob Watkins 2x140 and the next game saw the Mt regain the lead with Dai Phelps 100 getting the better of Trad Davies 100, 140 but again the scores were levelled with Meirion Evans beating Derek Dobbins 122,125,140 to set up a deciding final leg. The normally dependable Ray Williams was in action for Heolgerrig in the final leg but his 2x100’s were not enough to gain him a win as Colin Yendle replied with 2x100,140 to take the game 2-0 and the match 5-4 for a much relieved Mt team. Division Two. Merthyr Ex Club 3 v Baili-Glas Inn “A” 8. After a somewhat less than convincing start to life in division two the Baili “A” are now beginning to find their range and move in the right direction as they bid to return to div one at the first attempt. The first triples saw the visitors suffer their Achilles heel as they missed ten darts at a double allowing the home side take the leg with Denzil Griffiths 2x100 in fine form for the Ex. A “ton” apiece from Terry Morgan & Ashley Mayne saw the visitors fight back in the second triples taking the leg against the throw to level at 1-1. The first of the pairs battles saw the first hold of throw with Alan Mee 2x100 & Cled Jones 100 beating Wayne Jones 2x100 & Shane Williams to see the Baili take the lead for the first time and soon it was 3-1 with Terry Morgan & Drew Bradley getting the better of Wayne O’Neill & Matthew Sullivan and as Nigel Meek & Wayne Smalldon were poised on a double to make it 4-1 Denzil Griffiths 135 & Robert Phillps with a brilliant 153 out stole the leg to reduce the arrears going into the singles. Nigel “Grass Hopper” Meek 100,121 turned the clock back more than an hour as he beat Wayne Jones 110 to put the visitors 4-2 up but back came the Ex with Mark Nicholls 2x100,140 beating Terry Morgan 100 to reduce the arrears to a point. Veteran Alan Mee 3x100,72 out beat John Hobby 100 to put the away side 5-3 ahead and then further wins from Wayne Smalldon. Ashley Mayne 120 and Cled Jones 100 over Shane Williams, Wayne O’Neill and Steve Mahoney 100 respectively saw the saw the visitors take a splendid 8-3 win that moves them in the right direction. Penydarren Social Club “B” 7 v Morlais Tavern “A” 4. A hard fought game saw the Pen make the first mark on the score board taking both triples legs with Graham Elias 121 in good form in the first game. I. Thomas & R. Scott got a point on the board for the Tavern with victory over Clive Morgan & Graham Elias 100 but the Pen hit back quickly with Dai Richards 140 & Ceri Stent seeing off the challenge of I. Evans & Gareth Giles to put the hosts 3-1 ahead. Going into the singles there was just one point between the sides with the final pairs going to Tavern through Martin Bayliss & J. Gillespie. Old warrior Lyndon Price 2x100 beat I. Thomas to make it 4-2 to the hosts and then with Martin Bayliss and Gareth Giles going down against Ray Smith 100 and Neil Smith 2x100 the visitors trailed 6-2 and consigned to defeat. A. Norbury beat Barry Gilby 2x100 to gain the Morlais a third point before Dai Richards 100 claimed a seventh point for the home side. Nigel Bees then stung Clive Morgan 101,125 to claim a deserved fourth point for a gallant Morlais side. Martyrs Club 6 v Merthyr Rugby Club “A” 5. The Rugby “A” were clear leaders of the league a few weeks ago but some strange performances from them lately as seen things tighten up with now quite a few teams in the hunt approaching the half way stage. Both sides started the match steadily as they held their respective throws in the triples with Keith Evans 100 & D. Howe 121 in good form for the hosts in the second leg. Roy Phillips & Peter Worrell 100 claimed the first pairs for the home side against the throw beating Lyn Jones & John Wood and then John Sales & Alun Pearce 100 made it 3-1 beating Adrian Thomas & Phil John 100. Les Thomas & Roy Element then kept the visitors in the hunt with a fine win over Matthew Philips & C. Howe 100,125 in the last pairs. Peter Worrell kept up his great home form winning yet another singles this time beating Roy Element making it 4-2 and with further victories for Roy Phillips 100 and C. Howe 100,140 making it 6-2 the Martyrs looked set for a big win. The Rugby Club though had other ideas and fine performances from John Wood, Kerry Green 100 and Les Thomas reduced the arrears and gained the visitors three more very valuable points. Aberfan Social Club “A” 6 v Dowlais Con Club 5. The home side started much the brighter of the two teams taking both triples legs with living legend Ken Davies 140 in great form for the hosts in the first game with G. Thomas 125 replying for the visitors. Charles Davies 101 & Peter Emmanuel made it three zip with victory against the darts in the first pairs and it was soon 4-0 with the excellent Warren Rees 100,140 & Kevin Downing beating S. Davies & G. Coombs. Mike Griffiths & G. Thomas 100 finally got the Con into the game when they held throw in the last pairs game beating Lloyd Davies & Ken Davies 100,121. Lloyd Davies 100,126 made it 5-1 to Aberfan with victory in the first singles but then the Con hit back through Jimmy Daley, Jimmy Winstone & M. Griffiths to pull back to within a point. Josh O’Keefe took the tenth leg of the match to give the home side a 6-4 lead with G. Coombs beating Peter Emmanuel in the last leg to gain the visitors a fifth point. Division Three Merthyr Vale Ex Club (Daggers) 9 v Lantern Inn 2. The Lantern can count themselves very unlucky here as missed doubles cost them very dear in a very well plated match. The Daggers drew first blood taking both triples with J. Tarr 100 & Steve Probert 2x100 in fine form for the hosts in the first leg and Steve Llewellyn 140 & J. Rudge 100 in the second. All three pairs legs went the way of the home side with J. Tarr & G. Robertson 100,120 followed by Steve Llewellyn 100,180 & Harry Morgan impressing for the hosts as they set up a 5-0 lead going into the singles as the winning double continued to elude the battling Lantern. There was no change of luck for the visitors in the opening three singles as J. Tarr, Steve Probert 100 and Steve Llewellyn 140 took full advantage of any loose darts from the opposition to make it 8-0 in the hosts favour. There was however a ray of light for the Lantern in game nine as N. Taylor beat old campaigner Harry Morgan 100 to gain the visitors a much deserved and long overdue point. G. Robertson took the tenth leg for the home side before K. James became a Lantern legend taking the last point for the away side with a fine win over J. Rudge. Colliers Arms 5 v Penydarren Social Club “B” 6. This contest was tension and drama all the way with two evenly matched sides giving their all in pursuit of points in their quest for the top spot with the half way stage just beginning to appear on the distant horizon. An even start to the match saw both sides hold in the triples with the higher scoring coming from the home side with Damian Lewis 125 in leg one and Martin Firth 140 in the second. A break of throw in the first pairs saw Martin Treen & Martin Firth put the home side 2-1 ahead but the advantage was short lived as J. Sedgmore & Johnny Murphy broke back to level at 2-2. The final pairs went the way of the Pen with Michael Bond 94 out & R. Beynon holding throw to give the visitors a slender 3-2 lead going into the match deciding singles. D. Thomas levelled the contest with victory in the singles over Johnny Murphy but the away side hit back through Michael Bond and R. Beynon who beat father and son Keith and Damian Lewis respectively to nudge 5-3 ahead. In a game that was swinging one way then the other the pendulum swung back towards the Colliers with young Jordan King and the veteran Martin Treen showing their skills to once again tying the match, this time at 5-5, leaving the final leg of the contest to decide the outcome. Two veterans would do battle to decide the outcome with Martin Firth in the Colliers corner and Pen captain Phil Bond on the oche for the visitors. In a very closely fought leg the first to throw proved vital with Phil hitting the winning double much to the delight of his teammates. Imperial Hotel 6 v Aberfan Social Club “B” 5. Alan Phillips & c/o threw first in the match for Aberfan and lost their throw as the Imp went 1-0 but there was relief for them and their teammates in the second as Paul Prosser and his aids returned the favour missing doubles as the visitors drew level. Jason Launchbury 100 & Anthony Prosser took the first pairs against the darts to put the Imp 2-1 ahead and then finally with a hold of throw Jason Donovan 100 & A. Williams beat W. Morris 100 & B. Williams nudged the hosts further ahead at 3-1. G. Jones & Jack Colston then took the final pairs for the Social to keep them well in touch at just a point behind going into the singles. Jason Launchbury 100 and Anthony Prosser beat G. Jones 137 and Vic Jones 100 to secure a 5-2 advantage for the home side but back came the away side through Jack Colston and M. Davies to pull to within a point. Terry Dowman 95 out made it 6-4 to the home side with the last leg then going the way of the visitors through W. Green 2x100 who beat Paul Prosser 140. Division Four. Lord Raglan “A” 7 v Farmers Arms “B” 4 The wheels are well and truly off the Farmers tractor as they were bogged down trying to hit a winning double with the Lord running out comfortable winners. The home side took both triples legs as the visitors could not finding their finishing darts but the pairs legs showed signs of improvement with the darting duos of Dean Moulds/Stewart Charleston & N. Williams/M. Lewis taking the first two match ups to level at two apiece. Martyn Lewis & Ivor Price then steadied the ship for the Lord as they broke throw in the final pairs to give the home side the upper hand at 3-2 going into the singles. Alan Driscoll was the victor in the first singles making it 4-2 before a brilliant display from Stewart Charleston pulled a third point back for the Farmers. Bryn Lewis took advantage of missed doubles by Neil Roberts to edge the home side 5-3 ahead before B. Evans gained a fourth for the away team. L. Thomas and Kevin Snowden claimed the final two points on offer for a delighted Lord “A”. Farmers Arms “A” 4 v Dynevor Arms 7. While the “B” side were getting bogged down on their travels the Farmers “A” didn’t even get their tractor out of the garage as they were ploughed under by the visiting Dyn to complete a night of misery for the Twyn tungsten throwers. The Dyn dynamos were quickly into gear storming through the two triples legs before ageing arrow aimers John Thomas 129,140 7 Dai Jones took the first pairs against the darts to get the home side into the match and then Wayne Morgan & Gary Price held throw in the next to level the match at 2-2. Kerry Lloyd & M. Edwards 100 then held their throw in the last pairs to regain the advantage for the away side going into the singles. John Thomas levelled the match with a fine win in the first singles but back came the Dyn with R. Lee, Phil Lewis and Kerry Lloyd putting in some great darts to put the visitors 6-3 ahead. Mike Terrett beat B. Edmunds to gain a fourth point for the hosts with S. Barnett 2x100 beating Wayne Morgan in the last game to complete the win for a jubilant Dynevor side. VNU 6 v Rose & Crown 5. In a division of inconsistent performances this was another result that nobody would have picked as the match went right to the wire before we had a winner. Both triples legs went against the darts as the two sides made a nervy start before Kevin Morgan & M. Lee held throw to nudge the Rose ahead before Steve Darlow & Errold Jones levelled but parity was brief with P. Lewis & S. Hughes putting the visitors into a 3-2 lead going into the singles matches. P. Lewis increased the lead to 4-2 beating Eddie Cunnington but then great darts from Errold Jones 120 and Mark Hadley saw them beat Kristian Dowd 100,130 and Phil Hughes to level at four apiece. Dai McCloughlin put the visitors one point away from victory at 5-4 but they failed to get over the winning line as D. Clayton beat the legendary Kevin Morgan to square matters at five apiece with one leg remaining. In a tense finale Steve Darlow 100 kept calm to break the throw of M. Lee and the hearts of the Rose to win the match by the narrowest of margins. Division Five. Cyfarthfa Arms 4 v Silver Bullet 7. The Bullet were first to fire the shots taking both triples legs with Chris Davies 2x100 on target in the first leg and debutant Chris Morris 121 making his mark in the second. Dean Bracegirdle 100 & Dominic Illari took the first pairs against the throw for the home side to get them up and running but their fight back was brief as Craig Morgan & Chris Woods took the next against the throw to make it 3-1 to the away side. The against the throw theme then continued in the last pairs match with H. Jones & J. Russell beating Chris Davies & Anthony Morris 100 to keep the Cyfarthfa well in touch going into the singles. Cael Howells nudged the Bullet further ahead taking the first singles before J. Russell 125 and H. Jones 2x100 took the next two games to level the contest. This seemed to spur the away side into action and they went on to take the last three legs through Chris Davies, Owain Pugh and Dean Jenkins to complete a fine 7-4 winner. Morlais Tavern “B” 7 v Colliers Cwtch “B” 4. This was an excellent win for the home side that could finally ignite their season and get them moving forwards. Both triples went with the arrows with Andrew Williams 121 impressing for the home side in the first leg. Mike Davies & Gary Flye took the opening pairs for the Tavern and Robert Powell & Andrew Jones quickly added to the home sides total putting them 3-1 ahead with victory over G. Williams 125 & D. Minnett 100. The Cwtch kept their hopes alive with victory in the final pairs with B. Rae & Ken Gledhill 2x100 in good form. Gary Flye 2x100 beat D. Minnett 100 to put the hosts 4-2 up and 5-2 rapidly followed with Robert Powell 180 in excellent form in the second singles beating M. Evans. Mike Davies 100 made it 6-2 before Ken Gledhill pulled a leg back for the visitors before Andrew Jones made it 7-3 to the home side. G. Williams 100 took the final leg for the away side to complete the nights scoring. VERY IMPORTANT. Will all teams in Division Five please note that the Brunswick Hotel have now been expelled from the League. This now means there will be two byes in the division and the Committee apologise for any inconvenience caused.
